What causes hair loss?

Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) is a genetic trait. It’s called Androgenetic Alopecia. It’s inherited from your family. If the men in your family are showing a bald spot on the crown, it’s likely you will too.

This is an issue men have been dealing with for centuries. According to legend, Julius Caesar invented the laurel leaf wreath to cover his receding hairline.

Too bad Julius didn’t have access to Provillus in the days of the Roman Empire.

MPB results from genetic traits, and hormonal causes. Provillus can’t change your genetic history, but it can help with the hormonal causes.

DHT is the hormone involved in hair loss

DHT (dihydrotestostrone) is derived from androgen, a male hormone. As the androgen circulates through the bloodstream, it is converted to DHT by the enzyme, 5-alpha reductase. DHT tends to bind to hair follicle receptors,
causing the follicles to sprout thinner and thinner hairs until nothing regrows, and the follicles eventually wither away.

The life cycle of normal hair growth

Normally, hair has three phases of growth:

  • Anagen – The growth phase, lasts for two to six years. Usually 90% of the hair is in growth phase.
  • Catagen -- A transient phase lasting a few weeks. The hair becomes thinner and the follicle starts shrinking.
  • Telogen – The thinned hairs fall off to make way for new hair. This lasts for two to four months.

When excess DHT is in the bloodstream, it shortens the Anagen, or growth phase, and causes premature shrinkage of the follicles. Because the DHT is bound to the follicle, often the hair will not re-grow normally.

Provillus helps block DHT from strangling your hair follicles.

Minoxidil, the ingredient clinically proven, and approved by the FDA for re-growing your hair, inhibits DHT. This powerful active ingredient works in your hair follicles.

The Different Types Of Hair Growth Stimulators To Test Now

By Eugene Yeng

There are many types of products marketed as helping prevent baldness and promoting hair growth. Among the different types of hair growth stimulators available are those containing the drug Minoxidil. These are products intended for external application on the scalp. Other popular stimulators are those using a combination of vitamin and mineral supplements. These are usually ingested orally.

The active ingredient in Rogaine is Minoxidil. This ingredient combats baldness which is the result of increasing shrinkages of follicles in the scalp. This causes a thinned out appearance. Minoxidil works by increasing the size of follicles and thereby increases the shaft diameter of growing strands. Using products with Minoxidil will give results in about three to six months. This is because existing hair is not affected; these strands must be replaced with thicker strands. Therefore, enough time must be given for old hair to fall out and be replaced. Luckily, Minoxidil use initiates the follicular originating growing phase and prolongs it as well.

This drug can be present in products in different amounts and concentrations. Generally, effectiveness increases with higher concentrations. A 5% concentration and above is recommended for optimal results. Rogaine brand products can be purchased in extra-strength varieties that provide this desired amount. Products are available for both men and for women. Those tailored for men generally have a higher Minoxidil concentration.

Using this drug has some side effects. Overall, use can result in high heart rate and drops in blood pressure. In addition, water is sometimes retained in the body. Effects caused by direct application include skin irritation as well as flaking, redness, drying and soreness.

Other types of growth stimulators are available in supplement form. NOW Foods offers 5000 mcg biotin supplements. Nioxin and Country Life offer supplements that include biotin as well as others to target growth of hair, skin and nails.

One of the products offered by Nioxin is called Intensive Therapy Recharging Complex. A single bottle can contains from 30 to 90 capsules. Country Life brand Maxi-Hair supplements are contained in bottles of 60 or 90. The biotin included in both of these products, in addition to the NOW Foods supplement, prevents hair loss. It also increases the diameter of follicles and makes developing shafts soft.

In addition to biotin, Nioxin and Country Life add vitamins A, B and C, calcium and zinc to their multi-vitamins. Vitamin A works to ensure that the glands producing natural oils to nourish follicles work properly. When not enough vitamin A is present, dandruff and growth of dry and brittle strands often occur. Without enough B vitamins, the follicles do not receive required levels of oxygen and become weakened. Vitamin C helps growing shafts from breakage. Hair falls out when there is not enough zinc or calcium. Zinc is often consumed in small amounts than needed. In addition to iron, zinc is among the most often deficient mineral.

Minboxidil and different vitamins and minerals are popularly used as methods of hair stimulation and to prevent baldness. One is applied topically while the other is usually ingested. One is a drug, the other is a combination of nutrients. But both are very effective and have proven results.
