Male pattern baldness is cause by a combination of genes and a male hormone. Baldness most of the time runs in families. The simple fact of the matter is that if your ancestors were bald you are probably going to be bald too. There is nothing you can really do about it.
There is a distinct characteristic to the progression of male pattern baldness. It begins with a receding hairline and simultaneously balding at the top of the head, which is called the crown. The hairline continues to recede until it meets up with the bald spot at the crown. This creates a horseshoe pattern with the top of the head completely bald but hair on the side of the head.
Some men are comfortable with their bald condition. A man can still be very attractive even if he is bald. Women do not really care if a man is bald. It would take a pretty shallow person to reject somebody for a ridiculous reason like being bald. Still some men really feel insecure about being bald so they seek cures and treatments to either slow down or reverse the condition.
There are two drugs that are used to either slow down the progression of baldness and sometimes even stimulate new growth to reverse baldness. These drugs are Minoxidil and Finasteride. Both of these drugs have mixed results. You will have to give them try to see how they work for you.
Minoxidil is marketed as Rogaine. Minoxidil is put directly to the scalp. A prescription is not needed for Minoxidil. It can be purchased over the counter in a supermarket or pharmacy. Minoxidil works better for younger men between twenty to forty. It does not work well on a receding hairline. It works best on the bald spot on the top of the head. Minoxidil will reduce the speed of thinning and sometimes it will make hair start growing again.
Finasteride is marketed with the brand names of Propecia and Proscar. These drugs come in the form of a pill which is swallowed. This drug inhibits the manufacture of a male hormone dihydrotestosterone. Finasteride does not work as well as Minoxidil. Like Minoxidil it is more effective on the balding crown than a receding hairline.
Another possible solution is to have a transplant. With a transplant, hair from the body is transplanted on the scalp. Transplants have a good track record of positive outcomes. Transplants are completed over multiple sessions.
