What causes hair loss?

Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) is a genetic trait. It’s called Androgenetic Alopecia. It’s inherited from your family. If the men in your family are showing a bald spot on the crown, it’s likely you will too.

This is an issue men have been dealing with for centuries. According to legend, Julius Caesar invented the laurel leaf wreath to cover his receding hairline.

Too bad Julius didn’t have access to Provillus in the days of the Roman Empire.

MPB results from genetic traits, and hormonal causes. Provillus can’t change your genetic history, but it can help with the hormonal causes.

DHT is the hormone involved in hair loss

DHT (dihydrotestostrone) is derived from androgen, a male hormone. As the androgen circulates through the bloodstream, it is converted to DHT by the enzyme, 5-alpha reductase. DHT tends to bind to hair follicle receptors,
causing the follicles to sprout thinner and thinner hairs until nothing regrows, and the follicles eventually wither away.

The life cycle of normal hair growth

Normally, hair has three phases of growth:

  • Anagen – The growth phase, lasts for two to six years. Usually 90% of the hair is in growth phase.
  • Catagen -- A transient phase lasting a few weeks. The hair becomes thinner and the follicle starts shrinking.
  • Telogen – The thinned hairs fall off to make way for new hair. This lasts for two to four months.

When excess DHT is in the bloodstream, it shortens the Anagen, or growth phase, and causes premature shrinkage of the follicles. Because the DHT is bound to the follicle, often the hair will not re-grow normally.

Provillus helps block DHT from strangling your hair follicles.

Minoxidil, the ingredient clinically proven, and approved by the FDA for re-growing your hair, inhibits DHT. This powerful active ingredient works in your hair follicles.

Bioidentical Hormones

By Michael Minton

Hormones are little organic chemical substances produced by glands in the body. You would not think that "bio-identical," which means "biologically the same as," would be a necessary prefix, but it is, because hormones marketed by drug companies are mostly not identical. They are made from horse urine and other things.

A man or woman who opts for hormone replacement therapy to prevent effects of aging on the body will be bombarded with information about the risks of this or that or defense of synthetic hormones pushed by drug companies and it's easy to become confused. But the facts are that synthetic hormones have side effects, and bio-identical hormones, properly prescribed and taken, do not.

In the largest clinical trial to date, the combination estrogen-progestin (Prempro - a synthetic hormone drug) increased the risk of certain serious conditions. This study was done only for one year, a very short time considering women are taking this drug for many years, even decades.

Much of the results are somewhat vague, but out of 10,000 women taking this drug, the study revealed that there are risks to taking estrogen-progestin that did not show up in the placebo group.

- Seven more would get heart disease than the placebo group.

- Eight more would get breast cancer.

- Eight more women suffered strokes

- Eighteen more would suffer blood clots.

- Abnormal mammograms would increase.

The study also included women who took estrogen without progestin, and there was no increase in heart disease or breast cancer in this group. But the group taking only estrogen did have some increased risks.

- Twelve more women had strokes.

- Six more women would suffer blood clots.

- Mammogram abnormalities increased.

Because of abnormalities in mammograms, women who take synthetic hormones are to now have mammograms more often and be subjected to other tests.

The body recognizes bioidentical hormones as the same thing as is being produced by the body's glands, and therefore, almost no side effects occur. Another reason that bioidentical hormones are safer is that the doctors who recommend this therapy will take the time to test the patient and actually find out what hormones and missing and what is needed. Then a tailored program can be drawn up for each individual. Pharmaceutical companies go with a one size fits all model, and everyone gets about the same dose.

The most successful applications involve balancing all the hormones of the body, not just sex hormones. So if you wanted to feel younger and dispense with symptoms of menopause and andropause and even aging, what makes sense? Of course, bio-identical hormones.

One of the most successful bio-identical hormone replacement programs is run by Dr. Anju Mathur at Angel Longevity Medical Center in Los Angeles. She treats each patient individually, and has had hundreds of successes.
